Find Wi-Fi Anywhere in the United States

If you take your laptop around town with you, you probably know how hard it is to find decent Wi-Fi service near you. Well with every problem there’s a solution.

There’s a very useful website called JiWire. They have a database of almost all the public Wi-Fi hotspots in the United States and various countries. With with the economy in the drains these days who has money to pay for Wi-Fi. Well you’re still in luck, many of the hotspots listed are free.

All you have to do is select your country, select a state/province, and tell them your city and zipcode. A list of hotels, bars and coffee shops in your area that provide Wi-Fi in your area will appear. You can then get a map to that location and see if they provide 802.11B or 802.11G.

What kind of experiences have you had when using free Wi-Fi?

You use twitter, email, and text messaging every day to keep track of friends all over the world. But once your done having fun you have to actually get some work done.

Wouldn’t it be great if those services helped you get that work done. Xpenster is a new service that allows you to use a number of different services to help you keep track of your money. Heres how to Twitter with Xpenster’s service.

To get started go to the Xpenster website and register for a new account. After you login click on “Account” at the top of the page. You will then be presented with a number of options th choose from, just scroll down till you see “twitter” and click add.

You will then be asked to enter your twitter username (notice no password required). Once you have done that the xpenser twitter account(xpn) will then start following you.

You can then send direct messages to xpenser with updates about your money. For example if you wanted to post a new expense in the category of food you would post D Xpn dinner $25.00 #food. You can also record payments, all you have to do is post D Xpn received +$15.00 from #clientx.

How to: Change the iPod Shuffle Voiceover Language

The third generation iPod Shuffle has a voiceOver feature that announces your songs and playlists. If you bought your iPod in the US chances are that you will have English as your default language.

But what if English just doesn’t do that Latin song justice. Heres how to change the language of the voiceOver on a single song.

Right click the song that you want to change the language for and select get info. Then go to the options tab and click the drop down menu next “voiceOver Language” to see the available choices. Then click ok to finalize your decision.

Of curse if you wanted to play a practical joke on someone you could always change the language for all the songs. All you have to do is plug in the shuffle and wait for the iPod summary page to pop up. Then change the default language to something like turkish.

Twitter Starts Serving Ads

twitter_screenshot

You’ve probably noticed that little box just below the user information on user profile pages. Well before now they’ve only linked to some internal pages of twitter.

Lately I’ve seen this question all over the web, “How does twitter make money?”. Well to put it simple, they don’t.But now twitter has started to advertise third party applications (for free).

The ads are unobtrusive and generally promote twitter related items so they blend nicely with the current layout. But the real question is how much does it cost to get your app featured in those new advertising spots. John Battelle said that Federated Media is sharing some of its revenues from ExecTweets but also notes that twitter has a history of promoting apps that they find interesting without receiving any compensation for it.  Read the rest of this entry »

Wozniak is One Tough Cookie

Last week as a competitor on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” Steve Wozniak suffered a fractured foot and still managed to survive the first ever do-or-die dance-off.

Now hes done it again, this week he pulled his hamstring. At one point Wozniak was doubtful is he could endure the pain and continue to dance another day. He has since declared that he will do his best and dance across the ballroom floor tonight.

In a facebook post Wozniak said:

“I am constrained in movement a bit so my hip shaking may be low for the Samba, but I’ll push through.”

Wozniak, as the founder of Apple computers is a self-proclamed nerd with limited athletic ability. Ill have to say as of right now doncing is not one of his strong points, so if he dosnt improve his foot work hes gona be in trouble. But so far he has managed to woo the audience with his quarky humor.

Meanwhile, Wozniak is apoligising for his accusation that the voting might be rigged. He accused the producers of the show of keeping the results secret so they could put him at the bottom of the results to increase ratings. Afterwords Steve admitted that he has been spending too much time on internet conspiracy forums latly and that he was lacking any proof. “I wrote that the producers were liars, simply because I truly believed in that possibility, not because I had a shred of evidence” Wozniak said.

Wozniak said “The only thing I can offer as an explanation is that emotions wind up getting very high on a show like this. I was around some swarming emotions yesterday. Now I feel like a heel who stuck his shoe in his mouth, no puns intended. I have done it before and been on the other end of it as well, and it’s not nice either way.”

If you would like to Vote for him you can do so by calling 1-800-868-3410 or online abc.com.

How to: Replace the iPod shuffle headphones

Are you fed up with the ear buds that came with the new iPod shuffle that you just bought? The fact that the controls for the iPod are located on the headphones, using your own can be quite problematic.

But lucky for you theres a fairly simple way to use your own ear buds without loosing that almighty button that controls all aspects of the shuffle.

Now, I know that this video was actually made for the iPhone ear buds but the concept is the same. The whole process is actually really simple, just follow this tutorial you will do fine.

Alternatively if you dont want to risk destroying your ear buds you could just cut the wires, strip them and then solder the leads together.

Two Years of Tweets in a Book

If you’ve used twitter for even a few days you’ve probably realized that all you’re doing is posting little blurbs about what you’re doing. But if you put together all the tweets someone has made throughout their lifetime you would get a rich description of that persons life.

It interested me to see that James Bridle did exactly that, he composed a book consisting of all the tweets he had ever written over a total of two years. He used a custom script that he had made to pull all of his entries from twitter and sent it to Lulu.com to be printed up in book form.

As James put it

“When Twitter is inevitably replaced by something else, I don’t want to lose all those incidentals, the casual asides, the remarks and responses. That’s all really. This seems like a nice way to do it, and I’ll probably do it again in a couple of years time.”

Backing up your data is always a good idea but would you have ever thought of backing up your tweets? And what better format then as a book.

How to Use Your Cmera as a Scanner

These days business is slow and I only need to scan a document once every few months. In my opinion that is far to infrequent to even think about investing in a scanner. Yesterday, I had to run down to Kinkos just to scan a page for school when I got to thinking, “there has to be a better solution then going to Kinkos”.

While I was searching around fora solution to that very problem I found a nifty program called Snapster, its a program that allows you to convert a picture that you took of a document, business card, or even a whiteboard and turns it into an image that looks like it was scanned on a flatbed scanner.

All that you’ll need to do is make sure that there is nothing else in the frame except the document. At times the program can be a bit sketchy, for instance if you don’t have very good lighting and the document has extreme contrast variation the program might get confused. But all in all the program works like a charm.

The best part is that Snapster comes with a30 day free trial. After the 30 days the program will still be fully functional but there will be a little watermark in the corner of your image. Or you could always pay the $20  to get that removed. Snapster will allow you to save your documents as a jpeg image or as a PDF.

No Contract iPhone

AT&T confirmed today that the apple iPhone 3G will be available without a 2 year contract.

These contractless iPhone’s will be available for $599 for the 8GB or $699 for the 16GB model. But there’s a catch, even though there will be no contract the phone will still be locked so that you can only use it on the AT&T network.

You  will still have to sign up for an iPhone account with AT&T. Although what you could do is cancel your plan and only have to pay for activation fees and a month of service. But all you would be left with is a really expensive WiFi device.

If you really want to you can always jailbreak the iPhone and try to unlock it but, honestly would you really be willing to chance turning that phone into a $700 paper weight?

CNET’s Tom Krazit tried to contact apple to see if the same offer would be available in he apple stores. But unfortunately apple did not respond. So your only way of getting this deal is to buy your iPhone at your local AT&T store.
